Every week I am waiting to see who will be the next Top 10 team upset and tossed out of the top 10. This week it was Stanford, the smart kids really let me down getting beat by the Huskies. This is a trend, just curious to see who it is going to be this week. As teams start to get past all the cupcakes and more into conference play top teams will continue to get upset. Let's get into this weeks Top 10.
Top 10 College Football Rankings:
1. Alabama - 'Bama hosted and Ole Miss and as the Tide do, they "Rolled." Nick Saban has his team playing some incredible football and while they played a couple of soft teams along the way, they have handled them. Their defense is stifling and makes it extremely tough for other teams to score. While 'Bama has the weekend off, I'm ok with it because their schedule is about to get a lot tougher as they come back at Mizzu.
2. LSU - In the battle of the Tigers, LSU looked very average. They beat Townson, like they should have, but did not do it in a very convincing manner. LSU took the Tigers of Townson lightly and got off to a very slow start. While Les Miles team got the victory they better get it together, as they head into Gainsville this week. If they play like did they did against Townson, they will lose. While the AP, USA TODAY, and ESPN will drop a top for winning, I will continue to keep my word and not drop LSU, this week anyway.
3. Florida State - The 'Noles had a test on the road against South Florida. They were able to win in what I think was a slightly deceiving score. South Florida scored a 4th quarter td to make it a 13 point game but honestly it wasn't that close. FSU has looked strong and once again did this week. They play NC State this week, and as FSU continues on the road they should have no problem. But as all FSU fans know they tend to drop an occasional game that they aren't suppose to, let's see what happens this week.
4. Oregon - The Ducks stormed in to Wazzu and handed the Cougars a beatdown. The Ducks once again looked fresh in their awesome uni's, but it was their defense that actually impressed me. While known for their explosive, hurry-up offense, their defense allowed on 19 points (ok 26 but that late touchdown against the Ducks second D does not count). Oregon takes on the Huskies, who recently upset Stanford, but no upset is in the "cards" this week, Oregon will be just way too much for Washington.
5. Georgia - The Bulldogs found themselves in a shootout last week and were able to out duel the Volunteers. While I knew i would be a close game I did not think it would be that high scoring of a game. This week Georgia is going to be tested again, as they take on the Gamecocks of South Carolina. Georgia has a nice combo in the backfield with Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley combining for almost 300 yards and 5 tds, but its going to come down to the play of quarterback Aaron Murray.
6. South Carolina - The Gamecocks found themselves down early to Kentucky. Maybe they were looking ahead to their showdown with Georgia this week. None the less, the "Old ball Coach" rallied his team in the second half and outscored the Wildcats 38-0. The Gamecocks have a solid defense but like Georgia will need their quarterback to play very well. Either way one of these top teams will fall out of the top 10. I'm taking the Gamecocks at home.
7. West Virginia - The Geno Smith's, no wait they are the Mountaineers scored 70 in the track meet against Baylor. Smith looked incredible in his Heisman push, but I noticed that the Mountaineers lack any sense of defense. I knew there was going to be fireworks, but 133 points is flat out ridiculous. Oh and here his my "Mea Culpa" I have been trashing the Big 12 and loving WVU for the last four weeks, my bad. They have looked nasty and have a big game this week against the Longhorns. Texas can score too, but I am pretty sure they can play a little more defense than Baylor but not much. Geno Smith can't be stopped and they will win another game.
8. Notre Dame - The Irish come off a well deserved bye and host The U this week at Solider Field. The Irish have an incredible defense led by stud linebacker Manti Te'o. While "The U" is still not back to being dominant they have a decent squad but will struggle against the Irish this week. Notre Dame wins and as a good buddy has told me "It's good for college football, when Notre Dame is good."
9. Florida - The Gators come off a bye, giving themselves two full weeks to prepare for their battle against LSU. LSU looked beatable last week, giving the Gators some confidence going into this game. While LSU has a very good defense, the Gators also have an impressive defense and game should be an awesome SEC showdown. LSU will lose its number 2 rank this week,as the Gators provide this weeks upset in Gainsville.
10. Ohio State - I am finally adding a Big 10 team in my top 10. The Buckeyes with Urban Myer at the helm have looked pretty good. Urban brings a SEC swagger to a boring, uneventful conference. They have wins against Cal and Michigan State, and take on a tough Nebraska team this week. The one thing I can say against the Buckeyes is they are now in the part of there schedule where they have all conference games remaining and in the Big 10 that isn't necessarily a good thing.
This week should be another exciting week, with lots of big games. LSU vs Florida, Texas vs WVU and Georgia vs South Carolina, at the end of this weekend two more teams will more than likely drop out of the top 10. In my opinion Florida is set to upset the Tigers and I while it may not really be an upset I see the Gamecocks handing the Bulldogs their first lost. I like the Mountaineers this week in what should be another shootout and if you haven't seen Geno Smith yet this is a good week to give the kid a look. Well there you have it, that's my Top 10.
